Airports that serve New England- Thoughts

New England is a top destination for Fall Colors – but where to fly into?

Boston is a great spot but Boston is often its own destination- how about other Airports to consider?

Portland Maine – to fly in and out of- make a circle thru New Hampshire and Vermont and points further if you wish. Airlines that service Portland include Delta, United, American, Southwest and Frontier. Portland has history like the Harriott Beecher Stowe house, the Wadsworth Longfellow house, and the historic Waterfront. Portland Maine is coming into its own as a food destination- Old Port neighborhood has something for everyone fresh lobster, blueberry pie to sushi and Italian selections.

Burlington Vermont– another Airport to give thought to- in the upper Northwest corner of Vermont on the shores of Lake Champlain it offers enough to do for a 3 day weekend or as a starting point for longer Fall Excursions. Day trips could include Stowe for a ride up the Gondola Sky ride, short hikes, drives thru the trees or sample fine chocolates made right in Stowe. Other possibilities include a ferry or boat on Lake Champlain.

Albany, New York is often overlooked and close to so many scenic Fall outings. Explore the wonderful small towns along the Hudson River. Stay in Saratoga Springs at the State Park, take a dip in the Historic Spring fed pools, the National Museum of Horse Racing is there and plenty of good food like Druthers Brewing Company in the Broadway Historic district.

Bangor Maine is the Airport to use if you want to be close to Acadia National Park- but otherwise consider it as a starting or ending point airport due to its far north location.

Manchester NH is a great place to fly in and out of. Southwest Airlines, Delta, American and United all serve Manchester New Hampshire. You can land, pick up your bag and very quickly head north to the White Mountains, hit the 93 interstate and very quickly find yourself in the heart of New Englands best for small town experiences. The downtown area along the river is beginning to revitalize with old mills, restaurants and some lodging options. Easy day trips from Manchester New Hampshire would include Salem Massachusetts with its deep connections to history and America’s early beginnings, Rockport an iconic seacoast location, and Sudbury a place straight out of History with its lodgings that date back to the 1700s and the writings of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Tips on Travel in New England. Color moves North to South, however will tend to turn later on the Coast, in larger cities and around waterways. Book early whenever possible for the best selection of room choices, and remember you can usually drive a fairly short distance to a wealth of scenic and historic possibilities.

Overwhelmed with all of the choices, books, websites dedicated to Fall Colors in New England contact a pro to help you plan the trip of a lifetime. Hands on I have driven the backroads, stayed in the inns, visited the Historic destinations and eaten at many of the local places.

About phototrips

Raised in the Midwest - the center of the United States with hardworking parents-I got my first job in a library at 14 and have been working ever since. My grandma always loaded me in the car and down the road we went, the local market, the wildflowers, and a picnic lunch-she taught my sister and I the value of simple pleasures. My parents also always made sure we took a full week to 2 weeks for a summer vacation-we planned and looked forward to these adventures, again traveling on a budget, in a car throughout the United States. By the time my Mom passed away from breast cancer she had visited all 50 states and shared a love of the outdoors with me and her incredible classic fashion sense. I hope you will enjoy my blog posts about my Weekend Photo trips, my foodie stops and my love of new places... all on a budget but yet with a taste for the finest!
